Königsdorf lies about 15 minutes by car north of Bad Tölz – peaceful and rural, yet right in the heart of the Tölzer Land. Our tips for the spa town on the Isar.
If you holiday in the Tölzer Land, you will certainly visit Bad Tölz: the old market and rafting town on the Isar is a place to shop, a cultural centre and the starting point for trips into the mountains. Many guests deliberately choose to stay a little outside, though – quieter, with a garden and parking at the door. That is exactly what our wooden chalet and our apartment in Königsdorf offer.
The heart of the town is the Marktstraße, which climbs uphill from the bank of the Isar. Painted façades, bay windows, small shops and cafés make it one of the prettiest shopping streets in Upper Bavaria. Best to leave the car down by the river and stroll up at leisure.
Above the old town rises the Kalvarienberg (Calvary Hill) with the Church of the Holy Cross and the small Leonhardi Chapel. The short climb is worth it: from here you look out over the town's rooftops, the Isar valley and, on clear days, all the way to the mountains.
Every year on 6 November, festively decorated wagons drawn by teams of horses and people in traditional dress make their way up to Calvary Hill – one of the best-known pilgrimages in Bavaria. If you want to see it, arrive early: it gets very busy.
The Isar flows right through Bad Tölz. Footpaths run along its banks, and in summer you'll see canoes, rafts and rafting boats. The Isar cycle path connects Bad Tölz with Wolfratshausen and Munich.
On the edge of town rises the Blomberg (1,248 m). A chairlift takes you up, in summer there is a summer toboggan run and in winter a long natural sledging run. On foot it takes about two hours to the Blomberghaus – more in our hiking guide.
