»Uprising of Colours«: Schmidt-Rottluff and the legacy of »Die Brücke«

10 August 2026 marked the 50th anniversary of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's death. The Buchheim Museum is using the occasion to show its rich holdings of »Brücke« painters – alongside Schmidt-Rottluff, among others Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Mueller, Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein. What makes it exciting is the view beyond the founding generation: the exhibition sets the works against contemporaries and later artists shaped by the group, tracing Expressionism well into the second half of the 20th century. The common thread is colour – not as a copy of reality but as an expression of feeling and mood.

This breadth is possible thanks to the collection of Lothar-Günther and Diethild Buchheim and large donations from collectors Joseph Hierling and Paul Maria Wittmann. According to the museum, the show runs from 23 May to 8 November 2026.

Host tip: Save the visit for a grey November day – inside the paintings glow while the lake lies in the mist outside. Come in the morning and you often have the house almost to yourself, then stop at the museum café.

Programme in the final days

  • Sunday, 8 November 2026, 3 pm: Munich actor and painter Martin Feifel reads from Lothar-Günther Buchheim's writing on seeing and painting (in German). Free with a valid admission ticket – a fine finale to the exhibition.
  • 2 to 6 November 2026: autumn holiday course for children aged 6 to 10 (€50 per day or €200 for the week, book online with the museum).
  • Weekends and holidays: open studio for children aged 6 and over, 11 am to 5 pm, €3.50 plus admission.

Construction break and new extension

The Buchheim Museum has been extended since February 2025: a new exhibition hall, storage space, workshops and solar panels on the roofs, designed by Behnisch Architekten, who also built the original building in 2001. To finish the work, the museum is closed from 9 November to 4 December 2026, according to the museum; the full reopening with the new extension is announced for December 2026. Please check the museum's website before a visit in December.

Staying with us during the closure? You'll find Expressionists elsewhere too: the Franz Marc Museum on Lake Kochel and the Museum Penzberg with works by Heinrich Campendonk are both within easy reach of Königsdorf – more in our guide Rainy days in the Tölzer Land.
