The Tölz Leonhardi procession on 6 November 2026

Every year on the feast day of Saint Leonard, patron saint of horses and livestock, one of Bavaria's best-known horse pilgrimages winds through Bad Tölz. In 2026, 6 November falls on a Friday – ideal for a long weekend in the Tölzer Land.

Early in the morning the teams gather in the spa quarter. At around 9 am the procession sets off to the ringing of the town's church bells: across the Isar bridge, up the Marktstraße to Calvary Hill. There the magnificently decorated wagons drawn by teams of four horses circle the small Leonhardi Chapel, and horses and pilgrims are blessed. On the wagons sit families and local clubs in festive traditional dress – a sight you will only see like this in Upper Bavaria.

The Tölz Leonhardi procession is listed in Germany's national inventory of intangible cultural heritage and has been cherished for generations. Admission is free.

Host tip: Be there early – the best spots on the Marktstraße and Calvary Hill go quickly, and roads in the town centre are closed. If you arrive the evening before, you're there in a quarter of an hour in the morning and avoid hunting for parking after a drive from Munich.

Getting to the Leonhardi procession

  • By car from Königsdorf: about 15 minutes. Best to park on the edge of town and walk the last stretch.
  • By train: Bad Tölz can be reached from Munich on the Bayerische Regiobahn; the station is close to the town centre.
  • Dress warmly: early November mornings in the Isar valley are often chilly and foggy.

The Tölz Christmas market 2026

From Friday, 27 November 2026, the historic Marktstraße with its painted façades turns into one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets in Upper Bavaria. Around 50 wooden huts offer crafts, nativity figures, mulled wine, gingerbread and regional specialities. The market runs until Christmas Eve.

  • Opening hours: daily 11 am–7 pm, Christmas Eve 10 am–2 pm (according to the organisers).
  • Programme: live music on stage, evening carol singing, visits from St Nicholas on Advent Sundays and Krampus figures on Advent Saturdays.
  • For children: carousel, fairy-tale readings and horse-drawn carriage rides through the old town.

Admission is free. Programme and times may change at short notice – it's worth checking the town of Bad Tölz website before you go.

Advent in the Tölzer Land: make a weekend of it

Combine the market with a walk up Calvary Hill, a detour to the wintry Isar or – if there's snow – a sledging trip on the Blomberg. The next day, take a trip to Lake Walchensee or the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel. More ideas in our Bad Tölz guide and our ideas for rainy days.

In the evening the wooden chalet awaits with underfloor heating and the scent of wood – or the apartment for two with a view of the garden.
