Zugspitze day trip from Königsdorf: railways, Lake Eibsee & tips

Stand on Germany's highest summit: in about an hour you'll be at Lake Eibsee or in Garmisch-Partenkirchen – from there the cogwheel train and cable car take you up to almost 3,000 metres.

How to get up

  • Zugspitze cable car from Lake Eibsee: the fastest way up – within minutes you glide straight to the summit station.
  • Cogwheel train from Garmisch-Partenkirchen: the leisurely option via Grainau and Lake Eibsee up to the Zugspitzplatt plateau (approx. 2,600 m).
  • Glacier cable car: links the Zugspitzplatt with the summit.

The best option is the round trip with all three railways: up to the plateau by cogwheel train, on to the summit by glacier cable car and down to Lake Eibsee by cable car. According to the operator, allow three to four hours and set off early.

At the top

From the summit terrace, on a clear day, the view stretches over the peaks of four countries. On the Zugspitzplatt you'll find Germany's highest church, the Chapel of the Visitation, and in winter Germany's only glacier ski area – more in our guide Ski areas near Königsdorf. Even in high summer it's cold and windy at the top: bring a jacket!

Lake Eibsee: a walk at the foot of the Zugspitze

Right by the cable car valley station lies Lake Eibsee with its green-blue water and small islands. A trail of about seven kilometres leads all the way round the lake – a beautiful, largely flat walk of about two hours, ideal before or after your trip up the mountain. In summer you can hire rowing boats.

Host tip: Check the Zugspitze summit webcam in the morning: if the top is in cloud, Lake Eibsee or Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the better choice. If it's clear, set off early – the car parks at Lake Eibsee fill up quickly.

Good to know

  • From Königsdorf take the A95 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then continue to Grainau or Lake Eibsee.
  • Check tickets, timetables and maintenance closures on zugspitze.de beforehand; some tickets online are sold with time slots.
  • If you're sensitive to altitude: the air is thin at almost 3,000 metres – take it slowly and drink plenty.
  • Combine it: Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its Ludwigstraße and the Partnach Gorge is right on the way.
