What is the Path of History?

Since 2008 the “Weg der Geschichte” has led through Königsdorf and its hamlets. It was created by the local history working group (Arbeitskreis Königsdorfer Geschichte). According to the municipality, its 37 boards cover “over 1,300 years of local history and around 15,000 years of geological history”: from the former manor castle, old mills and inns to Ice Age features such as dead-ice hollows and moorland. Four boards are dedicated to personalities linked to Königsdorf, among them Robert Bosch, the poet Hans Carossa, the writer Paul Ernst and the painter Georg Demmel. The boards are in German.

Start and routes

All tours start and finish at the overview board by the Raiffeisenbank in the village centre. From there you can choose:

  • Village centre tour (on foot, approx. 1 hour): Gasthaus zur Post, the former Königsdorf castle, the Schlossquelle and Schlossbach, the former tufa quarry by the waterfall, Haus Carossa, St Laurentius parish church, the old rectory and the town hall.
  • East tour (by bike, approx. 2½ hours): Malerwinkel, Rottach bridge, the upper and lower Rothmühle mills, the former Hochland camp and today’s Jugendsiedlung Hochland youth village, a tufa column and the dead-ice block in the Kreuter Filz moor.
  • West tour (by bike, approx. 2 hours): Sonnenhofen, the mill brook and moor cultivation, the former Bosch farms in Mooseurach, the Königsdorf moor as a remnant of the former Lake Wolfratshausen, the gliding centre, Bibisee lake and the Königsdorfer Alm.

Station 5a: the Schlossquelle

Early on the village tour it gets personal: station 5 recalls the former Königsdorf castle, station 5a the Schlossquelle and Schlossbach (castle spring and castle brook) on Beuerberger Straße – exactly where our wooden chalet and apartment are. They share a garden with a pond and the historic spring that gave us our name. Read the full story in The story of the Schlossquelle.

Our tips

  • Guide booklet: According to the municipality, an illustrated booklet with maps of all tours is available for €12 at the village shop (Dorfladen).
  • Any weather: The village tour is short and works well on a grey afternoon or on your departure day.

FAQ: hiking from Königsdorf

Which hike near Königsdorf is best for families?

The Osterseen loop near Iffeldorf: flat, well signposted paths of any length, about 20 minutes away. The circular walk around the Kirchsee with Reutberg Abbey is also easy.

Which summit has the best lake view?

The Jochberg (1,565 m): in about 1.5 to 2 hours from the Kesselberg pass you look down on Lake Walchensee and Lake Kochel at once. About 30 minutes' drive from Königsdorf.

Is the Herzogstand cable car running?

No. It is getting a new valley station and, as things stand, is not expected to run again until Whitsun 2027. The summit can still be reached on foot.

Can I hike with my dog?

Yes. Dogs are welcome in both holiday homes; in nature reserves such as the Osterseen, dogs must be kept on a lead.
